Portfolio Reviews 2024

PORTFOLIO REVIEW ─ OPEN CALL

For the 2nd edition of BPM Book Festival, 2024, we have prepared one session of Portfolio Reviews, similar to those that occur during Belgrade Photo Month. There will be four reviewers and each one will work with six applicants (twenty minutes per candidate). The reviews will be of printed photographs. The Portfolio Review will take place from 10am on 26th April, 2024, in the city of Belgrade. Serbia.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Applicants should read the information about the Curators/Reviewers here, to find out more about the individual curators for this year’s Portfolio Review, and choose the one that you feel would be most suitable for reviewing your portfolio. Participation is free.

WHAT TO SEND

One PDF which includes a short CV and portfolio of no more than eleven pages (images 72 dpi). The CV has to be written in English. You can submit your application to a maximum of three reviewers, but please send an individual email for each one.

The deadline for submission of applications is 20th April, 2024, at midnight CET. The accepted applicants will hear back from us confirming their participation 24 hours after application.

REVIEWERS

Andrew Phelps

Andrew Phelps (born in 1967, in Mesa, Arizona, USA) is an American photographer  who, after receiving a BFA in Photography from Arizona State University, has been living in Europe since 1990. Motivated early on by his professor and curator of the New Topographics, Bill Jenkins, his work is rooted in a documentary approach to the landscape. The often autobiographical touch to his work is influenced by the cross-cultural lifestyle he now leads, dividing his time between the deserts of Arizona and the Alps of Austria.

With a group of friends, he is a part of the Gallery Fotohof in Salzburg working as curator and board member, lectures often on his work and the work of his contemporaries and occasionally writes about photography books.

Olga Matveeva

Olga Matveeva (1986) is a visual artist who works with photography, installation, artist’s books, and analogue printing processes. She is also an independent curator, publisher, and educator, as well as the co-founder of Book[e]Lab.

Olga graduated in political science at the State University for Human Sciences in Moscow in 2008, and from photography at the Rodchenko Art School in 2013.

Participant of international festivals and exhibitions of contemporary art.

In her artistic practice she is focused on the experiences of an individual in an ever changing socio-political turmoil while being immersed in mythology and mysticism. Originally from Moscow, she currently lives and works in Belgrade, Serbia.

Josep Maria de Llobet

Josep Maria de Llobet was born in 1973 in Barcelona, where he currently lives. Graduated in Law for the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, he combined those studies with photography studies at the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya (IEFC) where he now works as a professor. He has also been part of the teaching team of the IDEP school and collaborates with the University by giving workshops in several architecture schools as ETSAB in Barcelona, Girona or the IASAP-BV program from the University of Illinois. His artworks are part of the National Photography Collection of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Art Collection of Banc Sabadell and the The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Library Ciollection. His photographic work tries to create visual documents using an artistic language that allows him to reflect on social reality with a contemporary point of view. He focuses on urban landscape and architecture, using images as a visual reconstruction material of his enviroment. He has carried out large-format photographic installations in emblematic spaces such as the Modelo Prison in Barcelona. He has also been invited as a speaker at congresses and festivals. He is a member of Photographic Social Vision and co-founder and editor of Ediciones Posibles, an independent publishing house.

Francesco Rombaldi

Francesco Rombaldi (Reggio Emilia, 1981).
“After studying Advertising Communication and Design, he began collaborating with various communication agencies as an Art Director.
Additionally, he served as the director of several magazines dedicated to visual arts, including Track Magazine, which he founded in 2006.
From 2012 to 2016, he was a member of 001, a space and gallery in Rome dedicated to photography, which over the years has carried out exhibition and educational activities.
In 2016, he founded Yogurt, where he serves as Editor-in-Chief and Curator. Apart from overseeing the productions of Yogurt’s publishing house, he also holds the role of Art Director at Yogurt Creative Agency, a creative agency specializing in editorial design.
With Yogurt, he has curated numerous international artists and produced numerous editorial projects and exhibitions.
Yogurt’s physical  space, opened in 2018, is the Paper Room, a studio and bookshop dedicated to photography.
Since 2021, he has been the Artistic Director of Charta, a festival dedicated to the photobook and contemporary photography in Rome.”

Ivana Tomanović

Ivana Tomanović was born in 1971 in Novi Sad. She has a master’s degree in photography from the Academy of Film and Television (FAMU) in Prague. She is currently pursuing her doctoral studies in the field of fine arts at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. From 2001 to 2015, she worked as an editor in the magazine for the culture of photography – ReFoto (Belgrade). As a full professor, she teaches photography at the Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad. Ivana was the artistic director of the Artget gallery, the Cultural Center of Belgrade for the season 2016. She gave numerous lectures on aesthetics and reading of photography, and was a participant in numerous panel discussions at festivals, workshops and congresses dedicated to photography and visual arts. So far, she has published over three hundred articles in Refoto magazine, exhibition catalogs, books, magazines, newspapers… She is the editor of the photo-monograph “Dragoljub Tošić – Photographs”. She has judged numerous exhibitions in the country and abroad. For several years, she was a member of the national selection team at the Rovinj-Photodays festival, and in 2019 she represented Serbia in the European project “Transeurope” in Athens dedicated to European contemporary photography.
